But there is the danger of freezing or suffocation by lack of oxygen or too high a concentration of fermentation gas in the water. At a water depth of at least 80 cm, the danger of freezing is ruled out, however, a lack of oxygen or the formation of fermentation gas may become a problem when there is a closed ice sheet. We therefore recommend to make use of so-called ice preventers. These pond care helpers should be used in good time before formation of ice in the pond.
If you failed to use the ice preventer in due time, you must not break up the water surface. Pressure and sound waves in the water disturb the fish in hibernation. Instead you better thaw the ice by use of a hairdryer or hot water. The octagonal ice preventer made of Styrofoam is supplied with a central vent pipe. During the period of frost the ice preventer is floating on the water surface and freezes along with the pond. By the means of the central vent tube fermentation gases escape. For a large pond area we recommend the use of several ice preventers.
The proper handling of fish feed is important in winter, too: from a water temperature of less than 12 degrees Celsius, you should not feed the fish because the ingested food can not be properly digested due to the slowed down metabolism. The consequence would be that your fish would perish.
