The SunSun aquarium external filter HW-302 can be connected to any aquarium with a max. water capacity of 400 litres without any problem.
Despite its high pump capacity of up to 1000 litres per hour, this aquarium external filter is very low-noise. Rubber studs on the underside ensure optimum vibration damping.
The aquarium external filter is suitable for both freshwater and saltwater aquariums.
It can be placed in a space-saving manner under or next to the aquarium. For the perfect position, the hose connection points of the top of the cover are rotatable through 360°.
Filter media:
There is enough space for different filter media in the large container. The scope of delivery includes filter media for 3 filter stages. The filter baskets with their useful handles can be individually filled with the filter material. Nevertheless, please note that these materials must be arranged from coarse to fine. The top filter stage (pre-filter) efficiently retains coarse dirt, thus extending the service life of the filter stages below it. The pre-filter can be easily removed and cleaned.
The basic principle is – from the bottom up –:
1ˢᵗ stage: mechanical filtering
2ⁿᵈ stage: biological filtering
3ʳᵈ stage: chemical filtering (e.g., activated carbon, phosphate Ex, etc.)
Mechanical filtering:
Here are some examples of mechanical filter media: woven filter material, filter sponges, and filter wadding. Suspended matter is deposited on their surface as it sinks and is thus removed from the water cycle. They also provide optimum conditions for the colonisation of filter bacteria, which reduce nitrite peaks in the water.
Biological filtering:
Bio balls and ceramic rings are used in aquariums mainly as a biological filter medium. They provide a large colonisation area for bacteria. In contrast to many other filter media, bio balls also have a practically unlimited service life, which makes them a popular and inexpensive filter medium, especially in pond filter systems.
Chemical filtering (optional):
Activated carbon is used to bind urinary and humic substances, pesticides, metabolic products, and other residues in the aquarium water. This also reduces the ozone and chlorine content of the water. Activated carbon is particularly suitable for the pre-treatment of tap water, for turbidity caused by suspended matter, and for filtering out residual substances after drug treatment.
Note: Carbon should not be used in the filter during medication or algae treatment. We do not recommend leaving activated carbon in the filter for a longer period, as the bound pollutants could return to the aquarium water.
Commissioning:
The filter materials must be removed from their outer packaging before initial start-up. After the filter media have been put into the baskets, the external filter is filled with water. For this purpose, the pump cylinder of the upper side of the external filter is pressed down several times.
The multifunction valve on the pump head has a quick-release coupling allowing the hoses to be disconnected from the filter container without the user’s having to empty them first. This multifunction valve is able to regulate the flow rate and prevent water from leaking.
Venting the aquarium external filter:
To vent the external filter, the maximum possible flow rate must be set. The return hose is fed into a bucket placed underneath the aquarium external filter. The manual pump must be operated until no more air bubbles are to be seen. The filled hose must then be closed with a finger and reconnected to the device.
